Prescribing of Mounjaro Injections for Weight Loss

Mounjaro for Weight Loss

You may have heard that the NHS is rolling out weight loss injections (Tirzepatide/Mounjaro). This will be rolled out gradually across England to eligible patients over a three year period. However, Greater Manchester ICB (NHS commissioning body) has not yet finalised local services and systems to allow it to be prescribed within Greater Manchester. Mounjaro is not currently available anywhere in Greater Manchester for weight loss, including GP practices, hospitals, or specialist weight management services.

This means that we are currently unable to prescribe it for weight loss. Therefore, we kindly ask that you do not book an appointment with your GP or Practice Nurse to discuss Mounjaro. This means we can ensure appointments remain available for patients who are unwell and need medical care.

You can find out more about the roll out on the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Partnership website.

When Mounjaro does become available in Greater Manchester for weight loss, the roll out will follow the NHS eligibility criteria, so that it can be offered to those with highest clinical need. You will be contacted by the practice if you are eligible, so there is no need to contact us.

The NHS eligibility criteria is as follows:

Cohort 1 (Estimated to be rolled out over 12 months) – BMI of 40 or above*, and 4 qualifying illnesses from the below:

  • hypertension
  • dyslipidaemia
  • obstructive sleep apnoea
  • cardiovascular disease
  • type 2 diabetes mellitus

Cohort 2 (Estimated roll out of 9 months) – BMI between 35 and 39.9* and 4 of the above qualifying illnesses

Cohort 3 (Estimated roll out of 15 months) – BMI of 40 or above* and 3 of the above qualifying illnesses

*For patients from South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African, or African-Caribbean minority ethnic backgrounds, BMI thresholds will be 2.5 kg/m² lower due to higher health risks at lower BMI levels.

You can calculate your BMI here.

If you are prescribed Mounjaro, you will need to take part in a wraparound care programme. This involves advice on healthy eating, support with increasing physical activity and help making lifestyle changes.

Weight Loss and Wellbeing Support

Mounjaro is not suitable for everyone, and being eligible does not mean you have to start treatment. There are many other options for weight loss support available, including lifestyle changes, dietary advice and exercise programmes.

Better Health – online support for weight loss and increasing activity, such as home workouts, Couch to 5k, the NHS Weight Loss Plan app and more. You can access the website or download the app here.

PARIS scheme – If you have a long term health condition, why not consider the PARIS scheme for exercise classes in Stockport? This is a six month exercise referral scheme delivered by Life Leisure, for people doing less than 30-minutes of exercise per week and living with chronic health conditions.

Cheadle Hulme Parkrun – the Parkrun is a weekly 5k community event, taking part every Saturday at 9am at Bruntwood Park. It is free to take part, but please register online before attending.

Healthy Stockport – online support for more information and support on achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. You can access this here.
